Friends of the Northwest Branch Library

Northwest Branch LibraryThe Friends of the Northwest Library are a vibrant organization of volunteers that believe in the positive contributions that the library offers to the local community. They host three book sales per year and generate revenue to support library betterment projects. The numerous activities that take place all year long and the Summer Reading Program performers and programs are also funded by the Friends. They have both directly and indirectly helped thousands of area residents through their dedication to the mission of the Harris County Public Library system.

Before Northwest Library came to be, community leader Marsha Carlevaro contacted Harris County Commissioner Bob Eckels. With the support of Commissioner Eckels, Ms. Carlevaro enthusiastically sought out prospective locations for the new library. Rosa Chang, local business woman and owner of the Regency Athletic Club, answered the call and donated the land. The Friends grew into a 750-member strong organization and began planning the establishment of the branch library. The Friends went door-to-door collecting materials for the first-ever Friends of the Northwest Library Book Sale. This inaugural sale raised over $1400. Private individuals and companies contributed an additional $70,000. In 1983, Northwest Library opened its doors for the very first time. Since then, the organization has supported this vital library it initiated through fundraising, volunteerism and advocacy.

The Friends of the Northwest Library invite you to join in the tradition. Help support cultural endeavors and broaden the appreciation of many library services and resources.
